Chandler residents should be proud of their city in terms of leading the way in environmental actions. The City of Chandler takes sustainability and stewardship of taxpayer dollars seriously and strives for efficiency in operations while reducing costs and environmental impacts.

• One of Chandler’s first public buildings to achieve LEED certification was Chandler City Hall, a modern, energy-efficient, and environmentally complex incorporating as many sustainability and energy efficiency features as possible to save long-term operations and maintenance costs.

The Green Building Program is a major part of Chandler’s sustainability focus, as buildings account for a large portion of the environmental impact. Buildings consume approximately 40 percent of the world’s energy and account for more than one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

• Chandler’s Green Building Program provides incentives to encourage the use of sustainable building practices by private sector builders.
• The City resolved to construct “green” City buildings that conform to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

Solar- Chandler became the first city in Arizona to recognize solar energy systems in its municipal zoning codes.

• The City has installed solar roof installations at facilities saving $2.3 million over the next 20 years in electrical costs.

Water -The City has a comprehensive water management program that emphasizes water conservation and reuse by establishing an evaluation process for commercial and industrial projects that require large amounts of water to ensure the community receives the most benefit for the water these projects receive.

• Reusing our water from kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms, and sinks is collected and then used for irrigating turf and low water use landscaping at parks, golf courses, residential common areas, roadside landscaping, and non-edible crops. One hundred percent of Chandler’s wastewater is reused as a result of this program.

Energy- Chandler is joining cities around the state in converting street lights to (LED) lighting.
